I'm back with Our German Schmear Fireplace & DIY

My goodness, it's been such a long time since I've created a new post!
Life is getting shorter, and I'm getting up there in years, I'll be 68 in January. It made me feel the need to get back to posting and adding more to my "memory album."
I have four daughters, seven grandchildren and one, new, great granddaughter and want them to all to remember my style and occasional craftiness. Not to forget to, occasionally, inspire others with some of my creations.

Since my last post we have moved from our rental home, of the past 6 years, and into our new "forever home" in Sunset Beach, N.C.
I've been enjoying, time with the love of my life, family visits, a lot of sunshine at the beach and poolside, friend gatherings and having fun making our little home a bit more updated. We've been doing some upgrades and DIY's, decorating with a lot of our old possessions and have added some new creations, in décor, here and there.

*********************************

Now, for my first post back, I'm sharing the makeover of our brick fireplace and entry that we, finally, just completed.
(it only took 8 months of procrastinating to get this project done) It's late unveiling was due to my fear of attempting the, very popular, German Schmear technique, which, I can assure you, is waaaay easier to do than you might think!

So,here's a peek at our entry...come on in and take a look.

Everything stands out so-ooo much better on the lighter brick.

and I do mean that EVERYTHING stands out so much better!

This gives you an idea of how much brick there was to complete. Thankfully my hubby helped me do most of the joints, it really helped me a lot!

Here's the way it looked before....very nice brick but, just way to dark for our room.

Now, here's a list of what I used to get the project done.

1- 50 lb. bag of white thinset mortar (slower drying time than reg. mortar) $20 aprox. cost
I used 3/4 of the bag
***note some people use chalk paint in lieu of mortar, but it's way more expensive

painter's tape and plastic to cover areas that you are not "painting"

I used one 4" paint brush and one small stiff chubby brush to get into the joint crevices

plastic painter's bucket

******

I started by mixing, 4, trowel scoops of mortar into my plastic bucket and mixed it with enough water to create a peanut butter like consistency.
I let it sit for about 15 minutes to thicken slightly and then just started "painting" it on in several swipes across each bricks and lightened on the pressure where I wanted more areas of the brick to show through. Start light, you can always go back and add more mortar to cover more of your brick.

I did not do the "sponge off technique" with water. I tried it and it was just too messy, I liked the pressure technique much better!

I/hubby filled in the joint lines first.

You can see the smaller, chubby brush that I used....you may want to have a few on hand as they tend to wear out in no time.

My little buddy Gucci was always by my side!

I'd love to know if this post inspired you :)

Neutrals and Cranberry Fill the Mantel and the Tree & Season's Greetings

Sending Christmas and Holiday wishes to you all and hoping that the New Year of 2018 will bring you all the best!

Neutrals and Cranberry fill the mantel and tree this year....

with polar bears and a little straw penguin on a vintage painted pantry box.

Festive glitter makes this version really shine!

Trees in brass and topsy evergreens flank each side of the mantel.....

with deep burgundy mums and ornaments scattered in-betweeen.

I stenciled our intials in gold on the white pom pom stockings, just so Santa will know whos is whos!

Cardinals perch on each for that needed touch of red.

A tobacco basket fills the wall above.....

with a snowman painted, teardrop crystal, dangling from a simple wreath of berries.

Glass paint is a more permanent medium to use when painting on glass. I just used basic acrylic so I can wash it off and use it plain or perhaps paint something different on it.

A vintage child's suitcase holds a handcrafted basket filled with painted pinecones and acorns.

A little change was made in our bay window decor and this chubby cardinal found a new place to perch!

More of the same fill a gathering basket made by the same crafter.

I had the urge to have a tiny tree this year, mostly because I wanted to display it inside this Serena and Lily grass basket.

Golden glitter acorns, tiny white snowballs with garlands of bells, pearls and cranberries are simple hangings on the tree...
with a rope nest filled with book page curls and snow white pearls just waiting for a little bird.

and then....miracles do happen!

A small white sled on the coffee table as a festive display.

It all looks so pretty with the twinkling lights at night.....

and just a beautiful by day.

One last look through the mirror at the tree... a festive mirrored reflection always makes me swoon!

In case you missed these recent posts...this Christmas dinner for 15 is here

and the wheelbarrow in our bay window post is here.
 and until next time

Love, Hugs and Kisses,

Christmas Dinner Tablescape at JP's

Christmas 2012 is over and the decorations will be coming down, soon, and will be packed away, again, for next year.
Memories, of our festive celebration, will fade, but thankfully we will have many wonderful photos to look back on to re-live our beautiful gathering from "back in the day!"

We had quite a full house to pack into our kitchen's dining area... 13 in all, but, by removing some pieces, adding an extension to our table and squeezing in a little table for the kiddies everything worked out just fine.
These are some photos of our memorable day!
Seating for the ten adults was at our table for eight with an added extension at one end.

The extended end had it's own co-ordinating centerpiece.

The place settings with "Grandmas" cherished silverware, napkin holders made with gold lame ribbon and poinsettia's clipped from a dollar store bunch and my "score" from Walgreen's....Holiday dinner plates for just $1.19 each!

Snow scattered all around!

An elegant kiddie table, too!

The "Snow Mountain" Centerpiece Candlescape.

The dinner bell and a cherished creation.

The Chandelier post is here...in case you missed it!

This one is just "priceless"..... my four, beautiful daughters and me!

Another "fav" of with my girls and four of my grands...Rocco & Gianna were not here :( :(

My "Honeyman" and Me....he's the one who makes the magic happen.....in more ways than one :(
and I thank him for his undying love and care that he gives to us all!

This was my first year of sharing our Christmas, in posts, on my blog. I must admit that I truly admire those of you who have been doing this for years. It has been a learning experience for me with the fun of gaining new friends with fabulous ideas and décor of your own. I hope that you have enjoyed my "newbie" posts and will continue to follow me for many, many more!

Taking a much needed break.....I'll be back in 2013!!!

Love, Hugs and Kisses,
JP
